The Earth is Alive!
Appalachian Plants & Puppets – A Musical Collaboration

The Earth is Alive! is the product of mutual inspiration. Artist Jen Murphy heard the songs of herbalist Josh Fox and knew she wanted to tell their stories visually with Street Creature Puppet Collective. Josh dreamed of bringing the music to life as a way to teach others to appreciate the magic of the plants.  “This is actually the way that a lot of herbal knowledge is passed on, through story and song” says Fox.

Street Creature Puppet Collective is now celebrating it’s 10th year. They are a volunteer group of puppeteers, artists, performers and tinkerers based in WNC, “creating things they wish existed”, including giant puppets and pageants for local parades and festivals.

“We all love plants and share them with each other. We are even working on a video about pollinator gardens. Fox’s songs are a perfect match for us.” says Murphy.

Currently based at Jubilee! Community downtown, the group regularly brings their magic to the LEAF Global Arts festivals, the Asheville Holiday Parade, Asheville Mardi Gras and other events. All are welcome to attend their weekly Wednesday night work parties.

Josh Fox has built a life around the healing powers of plants. He weaves herbs, song, and acupuncture into his private healing practice, and writes music that uplifts the heart and honors his plant allies. With the same gentle, grounded nature he receives patients, he regularly holds group ceremony space around grief, heart-healing, and song-sharing. Listen to some of the songs here.

The Earth is Alive! is suitable for all ages. Come a little early to see an exhibit of interactive Street Creature puppets (doors open at 3:00).
